Fairweather IV

The steel motor fishing vessel Fairweather IV was launched from the Quayside yard of Fairmile Construction Ltd., Berwick (Yard No 654) on 17th February 1969.  She measured 22.89 m x 6.74m x 2.96m and her tonnage was 72 gross tons.  She was powered by a Caterpillar D353TA diesel engine delivering 400 brake horse power. Constructed for Mr John Buchan of Peterhead she was registered in this north east port PD107.   

 

The details surrounding her loss are not recorded but it appears she ran aground on South Uist in late October 1973.  Efforts to refloat her were successful and she was towed to Holmar Bay, Loch Carnan where she was beached, presumably with a view to repairing her and returning her to service.  For some reason, perhaps she was too badly damaged, the salvors did not return to remove her from this position and she became a total wreck.

The remains of the Fairweather IV lie in position 57 21.750’N, 07 15.833’W.  Photographs of  the wreck site show her sitting high and dry above the tidal line but these photographs are not current so we cannot report on the condition of the wreck as it currently lies.  Presumably the wreck will have deteriorated but wreckage will still be visible ashore at this position.
