Ayr Bay wrecks

6th April 2023 By Peter Moir Leave a Comment

A good forecast and the need to test an auxiliary outboard found us launching at Troon Marina last Sunday, to head out into Ayr Bay to dive the wreck of the motor coaster Glen Shiel, followed by the wreck of the cargo steamer SS Ahdeek off Troon.

We headed south on flat calm seas with blue sky and sunshine, something we’ve not seen too often so far this year. The first dive was on the Glen Shiel that sank off Ayr in June 1973, more details on her loss can be found here. Conditions underwater were good with high ambient light and 6-8 metres visibility. Below are a few pictures from the dive.

Our second dive was on the Ahdeek which sank off Troon in December 1898 and more details on her loss can be found here. Conditions were better here, with 8-10 metre visibility.

Both wrecks lie between 22 and 28 metres seabed depth, and are good training sites for budding wreck divers. The Ahdeek has collapsed a good deal since my last visit, but I guess at 142 years old as I type, its a wonder she is still there at all.
